Warriors! Come Out And Play Again by Afro Thunder

The Warriors don't take nothin' offa nobody. So don't you dare say anything about those crazy 'fros or bad ass seventies threads.

The Warriors.
You know, there comes a time when the youth of today needs to see the classical legends of movies that were. Like Casablanca, or the Maltise Falcon, or some of the other Humphrey Bogart’s movies. Or Hitchcock, or the Warriors. Now, I know that the Warriors aren’t as old as Humphrey Bogart’s movies, but it’s a classic none the less. And what’s unfortunate is that today’s young adults don’t care to see it. They’re all like, “It’s old, so it’s no good.” And I agree with them on some of the movies. But Warriors isn’t one of those crappy old movies, it’s actually pretty decent. Unfortunately, some parts are pretty corny, or stupid. Like the fight at Lizzies. If you’ve got someone in your house, and all of your buddies are armed with pistols and knives, it should be a breeze to kill three unarmed guys, completly distracted by women. But the women in the Warriors are as good of shots as the Stormtroopers. Speaking of which, have you ever seen a Stormtrooper shoot anything? NO! The clone troopers may have shot a couple of robots, but as soon as they worked for the sith, it’s as if somebody took away the sights on their guns or something. But, the warriors was fantastic, with nice fight scenes and a fantastic story. The story itself, in fact, is based upon an old Roman story. In this story, and a small squad of Romans that become trapped behind Persian lines and have to fight their way back to home. Sound familiar? Well that’s because instead of Romans, they’re New York gang members based in Coney Island called the Warriors, and instead of Persia, they’re in the Bronx, which belongs to the gang “The Gramecy Riffs”. They have to fight, run, and sneak they’re way back through over 200 gangs that want they’re blood.

The story starts off with a little introduction of the cast, talking about the trip they’re going to take to a meeting being held by the Riffs leader, Syrus, who wishes for the gangs to unite and take over New York. The meeting is a neutral zone for all gangs, and all gangs required to leave any and all weapons at the hang-outs. Unfortunatley, a gang called the Rogues, is not so compliant, and they’re leader brings a gun, and shoots Syrus. And at the same time, the police have just arrived to bust up the gang meeting, only to find everyone running away. And in the midst of the chaos, the Rogues blame the Warriors for the killing of Syrus, and the Warrior leader is killed by the Riffs. The rest of the Warriors are now looking for a way to get back home, and the train is the safest route. On they’re way home they have to fight multiple gangs from the bat wielding “Baseball Furies” to the erotic “Lizzies” gang. And all the while, they’re friends are getting arrested or killed. And when they finally get back to Coney Island, they have to deal with the Rogues, in a one-on-one battle. Luckily, the Warriors don’t have to get their hands too dirty, because the Riffs show up, and beat the **it out of the Rogues, after hearing a hot tip from another gang member who knew who really shot Syrus.

The movie itself has become quite a hit with everyone, and it can often be found in much of todays culture. In fact, it is second to Scarface in being referenced the most in rap and pop culture. Another example of how big this movie was and still is, is the fact that it was based on a comic. And it has recently also been turned into a video game. Now, I only played a bit of the game, but from the amount I did play, I found it quite enjoyable. The story from the movie doesn’t come until the later part of the game, but the rest of it is fun Backstory to the movie.

The game itself is extremely violent, and the majority of it is filled with senseless violence, chaos, and vandalism, but that’s why it’s meant to be a brawler game. Luckily though, they made sure that they would include mutliple chase sequences where rapid button mashing and sincronized jumps are necessary to come out of certain situations alive and well. The gameplay itself is quite fun. The brawler aspect isn’t as limited as some of the other games out there, and the ability to roam the streets with total freedom is a welcome brake from the tightly wound games that take you only one direction. Also, I enjoyed thoroughly the ability to play as other gangs and just have all out brawls with my buddies. Being anybody from the slow moving Hobos to the tight mouth High-hats. It’s incredible fun, but I couldn’t finish it, so I can’t tell you much more.

The movie itself was fun, but a little corny in some parts, and the game was near perfect, except the camera controls when you’re playing multiplayer get confusing, but both the movie and game get at 5 out of 5.
